Explore the scenic lake-side communities of Harrop & Procter
Harrop and Procter are two charming communities located in the Kootenay Lake region that have a rich history, unique character, and are home to a tight-knit populace of artists and outdoor enthusiasts. To access these communities you need to take the Harrop-Procter Cable Ferry across the west arm of the Kootenay Lake. Harrop and Procter offer a glimpse into the rugged and picturesque beauty of the Kootenay Lake region, as well as a taste of the region's cultural and historical heritage.
Harrop-Procter Cable Ferry
The cable ferry runs 24/7 and is located on Highway 3A, 24.5 kilometres northeast of Nelson and 8 kilometres west of Balfour to the communities of Harrop and Procter (on the south bank). If you miss the ferry - don't fret, the crossing time is 3 minutes so you won't be waiting too long.
Best of Both Worlds: Exploring Nature and Indulging in Local Delights
Harrop and Procter are surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, making them popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. If you enjoy birding then you need to explore Sunshine Bay Regional Park, which boasts a beautiful patchwork of fields, perfect for observing Vesper Sparrows, Western Meadowlarks, American Kestrels, Black-billed Magpies, and other exciting wildlife. At lower water levels, scanning out to exposed shoals can reveal loafing ducks and gulls. This little-known site can offer unexpected sightings during spring and fall, thanks to a valley pinch that may funnel migrant species. Additionally, the recently restored Harrop wetlands, located nearby, provide vital habitat for blue-listed species, including the great blue heron.
Procter offers an excellent opportunity for biking or hiking along the Proctologist Trail, which features five lookouts and a wide path for easy access, as well as a single track trail nestled in the woods. Take in the stunning views of Kootenay Lake and Balfour, while passing through old-growth forests and over creeks. During the winter season, visitors can explore the trail on cross-country skis or snowshoes.
After exploring the wonderful outdoors, make your way to 3rd street in Procter where you can take a peak at a handful of local artisans and where you can satisfy your sweet tooth. Here you will find the Procter Village Cafe where you can treat yourself to their famous cinnamon bun.
